Preventing eye disorders

Vision screening can be one of the most cost-effective clinical preventive services. Yet many children do not have an eye exam until they are in school, when it may be too late for early diagnosis that can alleviate serious eye problems. Jacksonville’s division of ophthalmology and selected community partners developed an interactive CD designed to train pediatricians in vision screening techniques for children ages birth to five years old. Thousands of these CDs have been sent to all general pediatricians and family practitioners in Florida. Nationally, their program is available via the American Academy of Pediatrics web site.
